It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had a feature film from director Duncan Jones (“Moon”) after his sci-fi thriller “Mute” from 2018, and his long-gestating “Rogue Trooper” movie based on the beloved/bonkers 2000 AD comic books (publisher of “Judge Dredd” and other extremely graphic comics) is finally ready to be shown-off.
Details, casting, and first-look images for the ambitious sci-fi action pic, now animated after pivoting from a live-action attempt, were provided by a new profile on the upcoming sci-fi comic book adaptation from the fine folks over at Empire Magazine.

Based on the ongoing comic book series created by Dave Gibbons (“Watchmen,” “Martha Washington”) and Gerry Finley-Day that was first published in 1981, the story is set on Nu Earth, “where war rages between the fascist Norts and the democratic Southers. As Rogue, a Genetic Infantryman (G.I.) engineered for battle in the planet’s poisonous atmosphere, who finds himself the sole survivor of an invasion force. Turns out his unit has been sold out by a traitor, which is where the sentient combat kit and vengeance quest all come in.”
The genre-bending animated pic employing cutting-edge motion capture and using Epic Games‘ Unreal Engine 5, hails from Rebellion Developments (had been trying to get a “Dredd” spinoff series off the ground) and Liberty Films Entertainment, as Jones directs from a script he penned.
“Rogue Trooper” has a cast that features actors such as Aneurin Barnard (“Dunkirk”) as the titular comic book character along with Jemaine Clement (“Avatar: The Way of Water”) as Mr. Brass, Matt Berry (“What We Do In The Shadows”) as Mr. Bland, Hayley Atwell (“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”), Jack Lowden, Daryl McCormack, Reece Shearsmith, Diane Morgan, Alice Lowe, Asa Butterfield (“Ender’s Game”), and Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”).
We’re still waiting for a concrete release date for “Rogue Trooper,” which is likely coming in the near future alongside a teaser trailer with completed footage. Until then, you can check out those first-look images below.
