“Very Young Frankenstein,” a new comedic FX series inspired by Mel Brooks‘ landmark parody film “Young Frankenstein,” coming from the creative team that worked on “What We Do In The Shadows,” is heading to pilot with an announcement concerning the show’s cast.
Deadline reports that Cary Ewles (“The Princess Bride,” “Robin Hood Men In Tights”) will have some company on the pilot with actors such as Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, Spencer House, Nikki Crawford, and Kumail Nanjiani joining him.
Brooks is involved with “Very Young Frankenstein” as executive producer alongside Stefani Robinson (set as both writer and showrunner), Taika Waititi (directing pilot), and Garrett Baschas. Other execs named are Kevin Salter (“History of the World: Part 2,” “Spaceballs 2”) and Michael Gruskoff (“Young Frankenstein”).
Considered one of Brooks’ greatest feature film efforts, “Young Frankenstein” was released back in 1974 and was a take on the Universal Monsters icon (choosing to take on a striking black and white visual flare, honoring the original “Frankenstein” and “The Bride of Frankenstein“) that starred Gene Wilder as the reluctant mad scientist Dr. Fredrick Frankenstein (grandson of Victor), Peter Boyle as the Monster, Marty Feldman as Igor, Cloris Leachman as Frau Blücher, Madeline Kahn as Frederick’s fiancée Elizabeth, and Teri Garr as Inga.
Funny enough, the final season of “What We Do In The Shadows” introduced Andy Assaf as Cravensworth’s Monster (a nod to the reanimated monster), and it is unclear if “Very Young Frankenstein” will have connective tissue to the vampire comedy or not, but we wouldn’t be shocked if there was some crossover.
The comedic horror hybrid show is coming from 20th Television and is poised to stream on Hulu if picked up for a full season order.
