Warner Bros. and the late director/producer Richard Donner spent decades trying to figure out a sequel to the 1980s hit “Goonies.” That pic focused on a group of kids going on a treasure hunt for pirate loot while being pursued by a family of mobsters in their small Oregon town. The studio had been reportedly gearing up “Goonies 2” and “Gremlins 3“ with a big concrete update on the former.
Writer/director of the Western film “Old Henry” Potsy Ponciroli has been tasked to pen a script for “Goonies 2” according to a report from Deadline. Although, a director isn’t mentioned and while Ponciroli is a director he’s not being mentioned for that job ontop of a screenwriter.

“Goonies 2” has an impressive producing team that consists of Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario from Amblin Entertainment alongside original writer Chris Columbus and Lauren Shuler Donner of The Donner Company also exec producing.
In the original 1985 film, the young cast included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Key Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton. We have to assume that the gimmick of the sequel would see the next adventure pivot to the characters’ kids. There have been clear indications in the past that the cast would be willing to return but we’ll see if everyone wants to participate 40 years later or if their schedules will allow it.
Could we see a return of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willie’s ship filled to the brim with gold/jewels or an entirely new adventure starting at the Goondocks (Astoria, Oregan)? That seems like a question to be answered down the line once we get some plot details from the studio.
This has been a long time coming but not the first attempt to get a sequel going, then again, we see this news as an optimistic update for “Goonies 2.”
