Well, it sounds like talk of Walt Disney Studios curbing their live-action remakes of movies from their extensive animation library wasn’t as accurate as we thought. Disney announced over the weekend on Instagram that they are now in active development on “Lilo & Stitch 2” after the live-action remake has earned nearly a billion dollars at the global box office. Making an impressive $946 million, which has cemented the remake as one of the biggest box office earners of 2025.
“Should’ve known he couldn’t keep a secret,” Disney says in their Instagram post. “A 626-day surprise: #LiloAndStitch 2 is now in development!”
Dean Fleischer Camp (“Marcel The Shell With Shoes On”) directed this new version, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be returning for the sequel; the likelihood is good given how successful the Disney pic has become.

The extremely popular Disney flick, penned by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes, has a cast that features Maia Kealoha, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis.
While “Lilo & Stitch” didn’t get a direct animated feature film sequel, the property has seen three animated TV series and other specials. So, plenty of existing source material to pull from. However, it might be a good idea to come up with a completely new adventure for a second installment. Unlike a lot of the other live-action remakes of Disney classic animated movies, this one isn’t trying to revive an extremely old property for a new generation; instead, “Lilo & Stitch” leaned hard into the nostalgia, and that bet paid off.
Audiences will have to wait a little longer before learning more about the sequel, including if “Lilo & Stitch 2” will be another Earthbound story, or potentially take the two besties into an outer space adventure.
