Today, we can reveal that Oscar-nominated German actress Sandra Hüller from Justine Triet‘s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer‘s Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest” has officially joined the cast of “1949,” the latest feature film effort from filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski.
The project at MUBI and OUR Films, currently filming, is a post-WWII road trip movie set during the height of the Cold War toward the end of the 1940s, which is an era previously explored by Pawlikowski in his three-time Oscar-nominated movie “Cold War.”
Hüller will star alongside veteran actor Hanns Zischler (“Munich”), with the rest of the cast featuring August Diehl (“A Hidden Life,” “Inglourious Basterds”), Anna Madeley (“All Creatures Great &Small”), Devid Striesow (“All Quiet On The Western Front”), and Theo Trebs (“The White Ribbon”).
An official synopsis provided to us for “1949” reads:
Set at the height of the Cold War, 1949 centres on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller); actress, journalist and rally driver, as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins from US dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar.
“1949,” co-written by the director and Henk Handloegten, is said to be exploring the themes of identity, guilt, family, and love, amid the turmoil and moral confusion of post-war Europe, with Pawlikowski reuniting with key department heads such as cinematographer Lukasz Zal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, editor Piotr Wójcik, production designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński, and composer Marcin Marsecki.
Poland, Germany, and Italy are the main filming locations being used for the production.
A producing team assembled for the drama includes OUR Films’ Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli, Extreme Emotions’ Ewa Puszczynska, Nine Hours’ Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger, Chapter2’s Dimitri Rassam, and Circle One’s Lorenzo Gangarossa. Along with Mediawan Company of Italy and France.
Hüller’s next big role will be in Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s sci-fi survival film “Project Hail Mary,” which stars Ryan Gosling and has a script penned by Drew Goddard, based on the Andy Weir novel (Goddard previously adapted Weir’s book “The Martian” for Ridley Scott). That one is from Amazon MGM Studios and has a release date of March 20, 2026.
