Zach Cregger Compares His “F***ing Awesome” ‘Resident Evil’ Remake To ‘Evil Dead 2,’ Confirms Austin Abrams

With “Weapons” now in theaters and opening number one at the domestic box office over the weekend, filmmaker Zach Cregger is gearing up for a reunion with actor Austin Abrams for his new “Resident Evil” remake for Sony Pictures, and is giving us a better idea of what’s cooking up on the horror video game adaptation.

Cregger hasn’t been talking much about his “Resident Evil” reboot, but when speaking with the folks over at Ringer Movies (via Bloody Disgusting), he compared his iteration to Sam Raimi‘s “Evil Dead 2,” citing how the film was shot with dramatic camera angles. He also confirmed that Abrams will indeed play the lead role in the horror pic, which we assume is a version of franchise protagonist Chris Redfield.

“It’s gonna be not at all like ‘Barbarian‘ and ‘Weapons.’ It’s going to be a rock ’em, sock ’em… It’s for me to play. And turn my brain off and just make an… ‘Evil Dead 2’… get crazy with the camera. Austin Abrams is gonna be my guy. It’s a weird, fun, wild story. This movie follows a person from point A to point B. It’s like a real-time journey, where you just go deeper and deeper into the depths of Hell. And it’s really a love letter to the games. Because I love those games. This is a story that I would’ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I’m doing it because I think this movie is going to be fucking awesome.”

An interesting mention there is that Cregger liked his pitch/script so much he would have turned it into an original project without the use of the video game IP, which should ease folks being a little apprehensive that he’s tackling a studio property over another original one.

If you haven’t watched the seminal Raimi movies, the first “Evil Dead” movie was a lot more serious than the two follow-ups and had some extremely brutal horror scenes (an exploitative rape scene being one of them) to the point the VHS version of the NC-17 pic was banned in various countries, leading Raimi to essentially remake the original as an horror comedy with “Evil Dead 2” leading to a less harsh R-rating.

The wildly popular Capcom video game franchise launched back in 1996, focused on Raccoon City being infected by the Umbrella Corporation’s man-made T-virus that turns the human population into zombies and mutates others into more horrific creatures.

Cregger also recently confirmed he once wrote a “Gotham City” movie script set in the world of DC Comics before “Barbarian,” which may or may not ever get resurrected by the newly formed DC Studios.
