‘Alien: Romulus 2’: Fede Álvarez Knew He’d Be A One-Time Director, Stuck Around To Write Sequel Script To Prevent ‘Alien 3’ Situation

It’s been a while since it was first announced that a direct sequel to
Alien: Romulus” was in the works with actors Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson returning, but director/co-writer Fede Álvarez would announce earlier in the month that he wouldn’t be coming back and is now detailing that reasoning.

While speaking this month at the HorrorHound Weekend (via Epic Film Guys Jeremy and SuperheroHype) in Cincinnati, Ohio, alongside his co-writer Rodo Sayagues, Álvarez stated that he isn’t Ridley Scott, who he believes is allowed to direct as many installments as he wants (doesn’t hurt that Scott has a creative say through his production banner Scott Free) alluding to himself being more in the James Cameron and David Fincher category of one-and-done directors.

“I don’t think I was ever going to . We always knew right when we finished that this is one of those things where you come in and you do one, and get out…All those directors I love, they just went, did one, [and] they left. Ridley, obviously, he created it, so he has the right to make a bunch of them.”

Adding that they decided to stick around to write the movie to prevent an “Alien 3” situation, where Cameron’s characters Newt and Hicks were bumped off, “But we did want to write it. Mostly it’s because we love the characters we created, so we want to make sure no one kills them right at the beginning of the next one…They went and killed Hicks and Newt just like that, and we were like, ‘Hey, let’s not let that happen.’ So we wrote it and made sure they stayed alive, and now we can let someone else make it.”

The next step will be finding a replacement to helm this “Alien: Romulus” sequel, but Álvarez and Sayagues have completed a script and will be part of the producing team, so we’ll be very excited to hear who exactly is assigned to the task. Notably, “When Evil Lurks” director Demián Rugna was brought up by the pair on the panel, as pointed out by the fellas over at AVP Galaxy, and could be a contender.

An official announcement has yet to be made by 20th Century Studios, but it sounds like production could come together much sooner than many are expecting. We’re still curious if Dan Trachtenberg‘s “Predator: Badlands” will be planting seeds for a new “AVP” (hopefully, a more accurate version) crossover, as studio head Steve Asbell has teased an interest in going in that direction not too long ago when speaking with THR last year.

You can listen to Álvarez talk about his reasoning for the exit from the “Alien: Romulus” sequel below.
