‘Possession’: Paul Dano Joins Parker Finn’s Remake Of Cult Cold War Domestic Horror Flick Led By Margaret Qualley & Callum Turner

Another impressive addition to Paramount Pictures and Parker Finn‘s (“Smile”) upcoming remake of the cult horror film “Possession” has been announced. They’ve landed Paul Dano, who will appear in the film alongside the main leads, Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”) and Callum Turner (“One Night Only”).

Trades like Deadline have backed up the casting report from Nexus Point News (increasingly becoming a reliable source for casting/project news and an outlet to keep an eye on). Dano’s string of credits makes him a perfect choice for the remake, with roles in “Looper,” “Prisoners,” “There Will Be Blood,” The Daniels‘ “Swiss Army Man,” and he played a serial killer iteration of The Riddler in Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman” (we’ll keep our fingers crossed he’ll return to Gotham, even if he’s residing in Arkham Asylum).

Polish writer/director Andrzej Żuławski was behind the 1981 original that starred Isabelle Adjani and Kiwi actor Sam Neill (before his career exploded in Hollywood), in what many considered one of the more intense horror films of the decade. Set during the Cold War, it follows a spy, Mark (Neill), returning to his home in West Berlin only to find his wife Anna (Adjani) exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior and seeking divorce as everything spirals into supernatural disaster. Infusing an obvious domestic squabble and dissolution of a marriage with horror elements added into the mix, quite the commentary on societal changes of the time.

Finn directs from a script he penned and produces alongside Jonathan Fass (production banner Bad Feeling) with Roy Lee and Andrew Childs of Vertigo, and Robert Pattinson (said to have once been circling the lead before Turner was selected, we’ll hold out hope for a minor cameo) involved, too. They also have Marc Bienstock serving as exec producer on “Possession.”

You might remember that director Quentin Tarantino took some pot shots at a handful of actors (as the filmmaker/podcaster becomes a bigger grump and his volatile stream of consciousness is shared with the public on a regular basis), and Dano was one of them, only for a slew of Hollywood peers and folks online to come to his defense. Upcoming projects include A24‘s “The Chaperones” and the Florian Zeller-helmed psychological thriller “Bunker” (co-starring with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz); the latter is poised to make a debut at the Venice Film Festival in September.
