“Bunker” is the latest feature from writer/director Florian Zeller, the filmmaker behind “The Son” and “The Father,” as the buzzy pic is heading to the Cannes Film Market and boasts quite a high-profile trio of actors attached to the psychological thriller.
Variety is reporting that the latest casting addition is British actor Stephen Graham, who stars and helped put together the massively popular Netflix limited series “Adolescence,” has taken a role in the FilmNation project that is going to be shopped at Cannes.
Graham will co-star as a key character opposite Javier Bardem (“F1”) and Penelope Cruz (“Ferrari”). We learned last month that the talented Spanish acting couple would be toplining “Bunker” and have worked together often, making the pairing unsurprising but still exciting.
With a script from Zeller specifically written with Cruz and Bardem in mind, the thriller “revolves around an architect who accepts a morally ambiguous project, building a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire and his wife, who begins to question their marriage after 17 years together.”
“I am extremely happy that Stephen Graham is joining the cast of ‘Bunker,'” said Zeller in an official statement commenting on Graham’s casting. “Since ‘This Is England,’ and more recently ‘Adolescence,’ I have always been impressed by the emotional power and beauty of his performances. I am thrilled to work with an incredible talent like Stephen, whose unique ability, in a single gesture, to break our hearts and frighten us will help make ‘Bunker’ a deeply affecting thriller.”
Joining FilmNation on the flick, Blue Morning Pictures and MOD Producciones are also producing.
Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor and Zeller won the Best Adapted Screenplay with Christopher Hampton at the 2021 Academy Awards for “The Father,” so there is optimism that Zeller’s “Bunker” could be another character-driven winner.
