‘Highlander’ Remake Enlists Jeremy Irons For Mortal Villain As The Watchers Will Appear

Veteran British actor Jeremy Irons has been added to the cast lineup of Chad Stahelski‘s upcoming “Highlander” remake starring Henry Cavill, as his said to be playing a mortal villain in the movie at Amazon MGM Studios.

That isn’t it, as The Hollywood Reporter goes on further in their reporting to reveal that the mortal collective known as The Watchers (sometimes good guys, sometimes not, who chronicle the lives and activities of the immortals) would be showing up in the remake. They had been originally introduced in the “Highlander” television series (the shows and films would crossover), and Stahelski had been trying to figure out how to blend all the lore into a single universe as the creative overseer of “Highlander” projects on the big and small screen.

The other main villain would be Dave Bautista‘s immortal brute The Kurgan, with a supporting cast that also features actors such as Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”), Karen Gillan (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Marisa Abela (“Black Bag”), Djimon Hounsou (“The King’s Man,” “Gladiator”), and Max Zhang (“The Grandmaster,” “Ip Man 3”).

“Highlander” focuses on a group of immortals (the second film revealed they’re banished aliens) fighting for the prize, which is a mortal life, while others kill each other with the main aim of increasing their powers through a supernatural lightning strike, aka, The Quickening.

Irons has been doing a handful of action IPs recently after playing Alfred in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League” before taking on a baddie role in Jason Statham‘s “Beekeeper” (is set for a return in the sequel).

Cavill had been injured during prep for the movie, but it doesn’t sound like that will be a huge hindrance to the production, as it just won’t see cameras rolling until 2026 (fingers crossed, given how many delays this remake has had over the last couple of decades).

Stahelski is still attached to direct Keanu Reeves in “John Wick 5” for Lionsgate and was hired to helm Michael B. Jordan‘s next John Clark installment, “Rainbow Six.” There had been some early indication that if this “Highlander” remake is a hit, they’ll be ready with follow-ups and potentially that TV spinoff as well.
