Chad Stahelski Producing Feature Adaptation Of Near-Future California Resistance Comic Book ‘Calexit’

Director Chad Stahelski has quickly become a huge name in the world of action filmmakers thanks to his super-successful “John Wick” franchise after helming four installments, a fifth currently in scripting stages, as he’s getting involved with “Calexit.”

This newly revealed near-future project was announced by the folks over at The Hollywood Reporter, who say that Stahelski is producing a feature film version of the fictional California resistance comic book with a script penned by writer Matteo Pizzolo, who also co-created the original comic with artist Amancay Nahuelpan.

A synopsis of the comic book via publisher Simon & Schuster:

What if a fascist, autocratic President took over the United States? And what if that President lost California, the sixth largest economy on Earth, by nearly 2-to-1…a margin of almost 3 1/2 million votes? What if the day after that President took power, the largest mass demonstration in history occurred, and the state with the largest turnout was California. And then, the following week, two of the largest international airports in the world, California’s LAX and SFO, were blockaded by protesters. What if California refused to be ruled?

We’re still waiting to hear about the film finding a home at a traditional studio or streaming service, as this package is going to be quite attractive. It had once been a project at Media Capital Rights before it went into limbo and is now seeking a new studio/streamer to help get it past the finish line. The producing team on “Calexit” consists of Alex Young and Jason Spitz of 87Eleven Entertainment (Stahelski’s production banner), alongside Pizzolo, Brett Gurewitz, and Brian Giberson of Black Mask Studios.

“Calexit” is one of many projects Stahelski is attached to with his “Highlander” remake at Amazon MGM Studios starring Henry Cavill, Michael B. Jordan‘s “Without Remorse” follow-up “Rainbow Six” set in Amazon’s “Jack Ryan” universe (expected to be loosely based on the Tom Clancy book, rather than the video game franchise spawned from it), a feature version of the acclaimed PlayStation samurai video game “Ghost of Tsushima,” an English-langague remake of the Bollywood action pic Kill,” the aforementioned “John Wick 5” with Keanu Reeves returning, and he is also producing/overseeing the Donnie Yen-directed spinoff “Caine.”
