HBO has seemingly figured out its television formula for DC Comics shows after the Emmy-nominated “The Penguin” (a direct spinoff of Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman“), and the “Green Lantern” reboot series “Lanterns” is on the horizon. There is finally an update on their new series that will center on the comedic hero Booster Gold.
A report from Deadline reveals HBO has finally landed on a new creative after there had been interest from the team behind “The Righteous Gemstones” (Danny McBride, John Carcieri, and Jeff Fradley) as they’ve hired David Jenkins for the “Booster Gold” pilot.
He’s only writing, but if the project is picked up for a series order, Jenkins is expected to be the main showrunner. They’re also hiring from within, as Jenkins is behind the Taika Waititi-produced pirate comedy series “Our Flag Means Death,” which is on HBO Max. The show was ultimately canceled after two seasons, and that announcement was made back in 2024.
Michael Jon Carter (Booster Gold) is a “Justice League member born in Gotham City who attends university on a football scholarship. He is expelled for gambling and becomes a superhero, although he continues to irritate others with his obsession with fame and wealth.”
Jenkins also confirmed the news from a social media post. “It’s true, y’all! I’m writing a pilot about this lovable goofball for HBO Max,” the writer posted on Instagram. Honored to work for James Gunn and very happy to inherit this project from Danny McBride, two of my creative heroes.”
Other series in the works at DC Studios include the second season of John Cena‘s “Peacemaker,” coming this summer, and a “Wonder Woman“ prequel project, “Paradise Lost,” focused on the island of Themyscira. The next big news for “Booster Gold” is who they’ll get to place the titular DC hero.
