James Mangold Signs Overall Deal At Paramount Pictures

Filmmaker James Mangold, who recently gave us the acclaimed Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” has signed an overall deal with Paramount after the two teamed up for the biker thriller “High Side,” reuniting him with Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet.

The news coming from trades like The Hollywood Reporter, the deal’s details have yet to be determined officially, but the studio sounds ecstatic about the new partnership that’ll see Mangold develop, direct, and produce new features for Paramount.

Sadly, this likely doesn’t bode well for gestating IP projects Mangold had been developing, such as his “Swamp Thing” reboot movie at DC Studios (one of the first projects announced) and his “Star Wars” prequel, “Dawn of the Jedi,” that would take place thousands of years in the past, even before The Old Republic lore.

Then again, we’ve seen recent deals with a director like David Leitch with Universal Pictures after “Hobbs & Shaw,” not exactly hinder or derail his recent projects for Amazon and Netflix. So, it doesn’t automatically mean Mangold is incapable of doing projects elsewhere, but we wouldn’t hold our breath that he’ll be sticking around much longer on those ones mentioned above.

“James Mangold is one of the most talented filmmakers working today, and we could not be more excited to welcome him to the Paramount family, starting with ‘High Side’ and many more collaborations to come,” said Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg in an official statement.

“The enthusiasm they have demonstrated toward big screen films and the passion with which they have embraced my ideas for future projects is truly thrilling,” Mangold added of the big announcement.

We can’t wait to see what movies this new relationship will spawn, as James Mangold is a huge fan of novel adaptations and biopics while also dabbling with fun action beats in his projects. Stay tuned, because we won’t have to wait too long before the next project after “High Side” is announced, as we have to assume he’ll want to get going on a follow-up project lined up soon.
