Writer/director Shane Black is finally back with his new feature effort in seven years, “Play Dirty,” coming to Prime Video this October, and a first look image has made its way online featuring stars Mark Wahlberg (“Pain & Gain”) and LaKeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”).
Collider has shared the new image from the movie, which is the latest iteration of Parker, an underworld character created by author Donald E. Westlake. This version from Black is said to be based on the book “The Hunter,” after previous actors playing the role now inhabited by Wahlberg included Lee Marvin in “Point Blank,” Mel Gibson in “Payback,” and Jason Statham in “Parker.”
Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey are producing the film via their production banner Team Downey with an impressive supporting cast that includes Rosa Salazar (“Alita: Battle Angel”), Tony Shalhoub (“Pain & Gain”), Keegan-Michael Key (“The Predator”), Nat Wolf (“Death Note”), Chukwudi Iwuji (“Pacemaker,” “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3”), and Thomas Jane (“The Punisher”).
A brief synopsis for “Play Dirty”:
A thief gets a shot at a major heist where he must outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man.
Black made a name for himself by creating the “Lethal Weapon” franchise and having a minor supporting role in “Predator” as an actor before leaping into the world of directing with pics like his breakout directorial debut “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (helped rebrand Robert Downey Jr. as a leading man after his hiccups with the law and substance abuse) the MCU sequel “Iron Man 3,” and his hilarious two-hander “The Nice Guys” starring Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, Angourie Rice, and a young Margaret Qualley (we’re still holding out hope for a sequel). His last movie was 2018’s “The Predator,” which had a huge overhaul with reshoots that stripped away a bunch of action scenes.
One of Black’s masterstrokes of genre filmmaking is his witty, dark/satirical tone, as seen with “Kiss Kiss,” “The Nice Guys,” and the underrated Bruce Willis action-comedy “The Last Boy Scout.” So, seeing Black returning to the world of crime is going to be exciting to see as “Play Dirty” is streaming October 1 exclusively on Prime Video.
