It wasn’t too long ago when the tech-media company Amazon gobbled up MGM to become Amazon MGM Studios, and another big studio acquisition could be on the horizon as Legendary Entertainment is said to be mulling over the idea of absorbing Lionsgate Studios Corp. with a buyout.
According to the folks over at Bloomberg, citing sources, Legendary reportedly first approached the company about the acquisition after Lionsgate finalized its separation from its TV and streaming division, Starz Entertainment Corp. TV back in May.

IF, and we stress “if” this goes through, this could help Legendary finally secure a distributor under their preview after longtime collaborations with Warner Bros. (multiple DC Comics films going back to “Batman Begins“) and Universal Pictures (on things like “Jurassic World,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” and “Pacific Rim: Uprising“).
Lionsgate, of course, has plenty of successful films and franchises under its belt, with “The Hunger Games,” “Twilight” (a reboot has been talked up in the past), and “John Wick” to name a few, making them an attractive studio. We can’t help but suspect that Legendary could help Lionsgate with quality control.
Some of their big upcoming high-profile projects include the Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk,” the Hong Kong-set “John Wick” spinoff “Caine” with Donnie Yen starring/directing, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping,” Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “American Pyscho,” and a gestating “John Wick 5” with both Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski returning.
Legendary has been behind the successful “Dune” (Denis Villeneuve is currently filming “Dune: Part Three“) and MonsterVerse (“Godzilla x Kong: Supernova” next up) franchises, alongside the recent mega-hit “A Minecraft Movie.”
That said, we’ve seen reports like this that have gone nowhere, like industry chatter of Apple wanting to get their mits on Sony Pictures or another potential Warner Bros. sell-off. Only time will tell if Legendary will indeed acquire Lionsgate.
