After surviving resort politics in “The White Lotus,” Michelle Monaghan is heading to the ice. The actress will lead an untitled eight-episode hockey drama set in rural Minnesota for Netflix, a character-driven series from creator Nick Naveda that promises small-town tension, bruised ambition, and the emotional chill beneath the rink lights. The project brings together an impressive creative lineup: showrunner Bridget Bedard (“Transparent”), director Trey Edward Shults (“Hurry Up Tomorrow”), and executive producer Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Star Wars: Starfighter”) under his 21 Laps banner.
An official logline for the new hockey series:
For the town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, hockey is everything, until a tragic loss knocks the legs out from under the high school’s legendary team. Monaghan plays Harper Sullivan, an unlikely hockey coach who’s tasked with resurrecting the team from the brink of defeat and bringing South Dorothy back to life.

“This show has long been a 21 Laps favorite and one of the best pieces we have had the privilege of developing and supporting,” Levy said in an official statement. “Nick and Bridget have built a world and ensemble of characters that are rooted in authenticity and huge heart, which, not surprisingly, attracted such great talent with our director, Trey Edward Shults, and lead Michelle Monaghan. With its visceral sports backdrop and a story grounded in deep humanity, we cannot wait to bring this show to a global audience.”
Monaghan’s TV credits include the first season of HBO’s “True Detective,” the acclaimed last season of Mike White’s “The White Lotus,” and she had previously worked with Netflix on the series “Echoes” and the action thriller feature film “Black Site.”
“I’ve carried South Dorothy and its people in my heart for as long as I can remember,” Naveda said of the upcoming Netflix series. “To finally bring that world to life with my Grizzly family at 21 Laps and Netflix is nothing short of a dream come true. Big love and gratitude to my partners for this opportunity, and for all their unyielding support over the years.”
Moera Ainai (“The Perfect Couple”) produces the show, alongside executive producers Levy, Dan Levine (“Arrival,” “All the Light We Cannot See,” “Shadow & Bone”), and Robert Atwood (“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”) for 21 Laps, Shults (who helms the series’ first two episodes), and Bedard.
