It wasn’t too long ago that the Japanese anime film ‘Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc‘ made huge waves at the box office, and it has landed the top spot on quite an interesting list of Top 10 films of the year. The cinephile social media app Letterboxd (via Collider) has a Top 10 list based on the average rating (out of five stars) of movies watched by at least 50,000 users. A sign that anime is bigger than ever.
Others mentioned in the top five rankings include “One Battle After Another,” “Sentimental Value,” “No Other Choice,” and “Train Dreams.”

While not a smoking gun of what awards season is going to look like, this Letterboxd list is certainly a small glimpse into how audiences view these recent releases and could explain why the top result has resonated with so many people. Released by Sony Pictures back in October, “Chainsaw Man” ended up making $150 million globally, with $43.2 million of that coming from the North American box office and may end up potentially being considered for Best Animated film at the Academy Awards alongside the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2” (had been released here domestically by A24 and has amassed an impressive $2.1 billion globally), which nabbed the sixth spot.
“Chainsaw Man” is part of the wave of modern anime features, as the animation genre is big business and putting asses in seats. Another big anime landmark release from 2025 that has been making bank was Japan’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie – Infinity Castle,” as that pic (also released by Sony Pictures) has earned $769 million, which is quite the impressive take for a non-Disney project.
Speaking of animated films, we are a little shocked that the Netflix phenomenon “KPop Demon Hunters” didn’t make this list despite the huge viewership revealed by the streaming service. Then again, there are a couple of weeks left in December, which could see the final Top 10 maybe shift by the 31st.
