Acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar is coming off his English-language film debut with “The Room Next Door” (starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore) from 2024. His latest effort, “Bitter Christmas” (titled “Autofiction” in France), is heading to the 2026 Cannes Film Festival next month and will be in direct competition for the prestigious Palme d’Or.
With that in mind, a new trailer has made its way online and is promoting the drama’s arrival in French cinemas on May 20, 2026. It has a cast that includes Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit, and Quim Gutiérrez.
An official logline for “Bitter Christmas”:
“Follows Elsa, an advertising director whose mother dies during a long December holiday. She works non-stop and, without realizing, doesn’t give herself time to mourn her mother’s absence. After a crisis, Elsa decides to travel to the island of Lanzarote, accompanied by her friend Patricia, who also needs to get away from the city. The story of these characters run parallel to that of a screenwriter and film director, exploring how life and fiction are inseparably linked, sometimes painfully so.“
When it comes to the film’s U.S. distribution (the film already debuted in Spanish cinemas back in March, via Warner Bros. Pictures), that is being handled by the folks over at Sony Pictures Classics; we’re still waiting on a concrete release date from them concerning “Bitter Christmas.” Until then, check out Pathe‘s trailer for the new Cannes-bound pic below.
