James Gunn Calls ‘Man of Tomorrow’ A Lex Luthor & Superman Story About “Working Together” Against “Bigger Threat”

James Gunn has confirmed what we all assumed was happening with his “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow,” as Lex Luthor and Clark Kent are forced to team up to fight a “much bigger threat.”

This comes from the man himself, when he was being interviewed on “The Howard Stern Show” (Stern, admittedly a massive fan of superheroes and even created his own short-lived character, Fartman) pulled via fan accounts on social media and Variety, detailing the pair-up, which many fans are speculating means that DC’s robotic/cosmic baddie Brainiac is finally making his big screen debut.

“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn said of his sequel to Stern. “It’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

That’s not only it, as he praised Milly Alcock‘s casting as Clark’s cousin Supergirl (“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” arrives next year and features Jason Momoa as alien bounty hunter Lobo) as one of the best moves he’s made, so far.

“Milly Alcock might be the best bit of casting I’ve done in my entire life. I think she’s absolutely stunning in the movie.”

If you aren’t aware, Tim Burton‘s original attempt to make a modern “Superman” movie in the 1990s, starring Nicolas Cage (another Superman die-hard fan) as Clark, would have had Brainiac as the main villain, but the movie never came together. More recently, Gunn revealed to the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Brainiac was briefly considered for his first “Superman” installment.

That said, we can’t rule out Momoa’s Lobo showing up as well, as he’s able to fight folks from Krypton and could have some plotline with this new movie after his “Supergirl” appearance. Getting him to Earth likely would mean that The Justice Gang and Supes would have to get involved, given how powerful Lobo is in the realm of cosmic threats (Lobo might also be a great addition to something like “Suicide Squad 3,” as he’s like DC’s Deadpool or Wolverine).

“Man of Tomorrow” is set to be released on July 9, 2027, so there is going to be plenty more to learn about the superhero sequel in the coming months.
