‘Baby Boom’: Director Michael Showalter To Reimagine Diane Keaton Comedy For Amazon MGM Studios

Beloved comedian/director Michael Showalter (“The Big Sick”) has been enlisted by Amazon MGM Studios to helm a new iteration of the 1980s comedy “Baby Boom,” as the project, which focused on a professional working woman who inherits a baby from a distant relative and leads to plenty of comedic parenting moments, is poised to be made for a modern audience.

The original film from 1987, directed by Charles Shyer (“Father of the Bride”), was co-written and produced by Nancy Meyers (“Private Benjamin,” “The Intern,” “Father of the Bride”), starring the late Diane Keaton (who sadly passed last month) alongside Harold Ramis, Sam Wanamaker, and Sam Shepard. It’s hard not to see how the movie would go on to help influence projects like the Adam Sandler comedy “Big Daddy,” which shared a similar premise of instant parenthood with a comedic twist.

Details of what the studio and Showalter are aiming to do with this new “reimagining” aren’t mentioned in the report from Deadline. However, we do know that the producing team includes Stacey Sher for Shiny Penny, Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions. Katie Aquino will also executive produce for Shiny Penny, and Emily Crook at Semi-Formal.

A synopsis for that original iteration of “Baby Boom” via MGM+:

J.C. (Keaton) thinks she has it all together. Beautiful and talented, she’s on the road to certain success, then an adorable baby girl comes into her life by way of a distant cousin’s will. Juggling power lunches and powdered formula, she is soon forced off the fast track by a conniving colleague and a bigoted boss.

A lead isn’t named in the report, but Showalter has been making a name for himself by lining up plenty of female-centric TV and film projects working with a specturm of actresses such as Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Anne Hathaway (“The Idea of You”), Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”), Dakota Johnson (“Verity”), Issa Rae (“The Lovebirds”), Michelle Pfeiffer (“Oh.What.Fun”), Alia Shawkat (“Search Party”), and Vanessa Bayer (“I Love That For You”). So, whoever lands the gig for “Baby Boom,” we have to assume they’ll be a good fit with the filmmaker.
