Brandon Sklenar of “The Housemaid” and the “Yellowstone” prequel spinoff “1923” is leading Paramount Pictures‘ “The Rescue,” which is a modern western set within the world of rodeo cowboys, and the studio has added a bunch of new cast members to the high-profile studio project.
A casting update from Deadline has revealed Josh Lucas, Tim Blake Nelson, and Josh Duhamel will be joining Sklenar in the pic that also sees “Old Henry” director Potsy Ponciroli at the helm, reuniting the filmmaker with Nelson, who toplined that underrated Western. That’s not it, as others among the call sheet are Nick Searcy, Lorelei Olivia Mote, Austin Amelio, and Spencer Treat Clark.

“The Rescue” has a script penned by veteran screenwriter John Fusco, who was behind the two “Young Guns” movies (currently developing a third installment called “Young Guns: Dead or Alive” for Emilio Estevez to star/direct), Kevin Costner-led lawman film “The Highwaymen,” “The Forbidden Kingdom,” and created the Netflix “Marco Polo” series.
We’re still waiting on more concrete plot details, but the movie is said to focus on a rodeo cowboy who will see his true grit tested outside of the arena.
This new neo-western feature project certainly feels like part of the new era of Paramount Skydance, under the oversight of David Ellison, given that “The Rescue” feels like it could take place within the world of the Taylor Sheridan series (notably, both Lucas and Sklenar stand out as being from the world of “Yellowstone”).
“The Rescue” has already been scheduled for next year by Paramount on January 29, 2027.
