Harkening back to his 2006 credit card commercial for American Express, writer and director Wes Anderson is taking a rare opportunity to be in front of the camera for a new ad for German luxury pen brand Montblanc alongside actors Michael Cera (very odd and uncanny valley to see him sporting a beard) and Rupert Friend, who are featured among the cast of “The Phoenician Scheme.”
There is also a scene where actor Waris Ahuwalia (“Life Aquatic,” “The Darjeeling Limited”), recently seen briefly in “Ballerina,” is djing and playing the old school techno hit Sandstorm by Darude for an upcoming Christmas party. The tune makes a comeback toward the end of the cheeky commercial.
As alluded to in the ad, this isn’t the first time Anderson has collaborated with Montblanc, as he did another ad for them last year with “100 Years of Meisterstück” that saw the filmmaker alongside Friend and Jason Schwartzman around the release of “Asteroid City.” If you weren’t aware, the company is also involved with other products such as bags, perfumes, small leather goods, and watches.
No rest for the wicked as Anderson is already putting together his next secreative project with longtime collaborator and co-writer Roman Coppola, along with fellow filmmaker/actor/comedian/host Richard Ayoade (“Submarine”), who recently took roles in Anderson’s Netflix shorts “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” and “The Rat Catcher,” and the aforementioned “Phoenician Scheme.”
You can watch the latest ad from Anderson for Montblanc at the bottom, alongside some older ones from over the years.
