We’re looking at another comedic take on the film industry as George Clooney leads the latest Netflix film from writer/director Noah Baumbach with his Hollywood-set “Jay Kelly,” and there are some new stills from the upcoming dramedy release that will be making its debut at the Venice Film Festival.
A new batch of images from “Jay Kelly” via a new Vanity Fair profile has some first looks of the rest of the cast that includes Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Riley Keough, Isla Fisher, Jim Broadbent, Greta Gerwig, Patrick Wilson, and more.
Emily Mortimer, who also appears in the pic, co-wrote the movie with Baumbach. The director previously worked with the streaming giant on “Marriage Story” and “White Noise.” Both Clooney and Sandler have an established working relationship with the streamer as well, with the latter most recently being seen in slapstick golf comedy “Happy Gilmore 2.”
The recent profile shared some more concrete plot and character details after a vague logline was making the rounds:
“A gigantic movie star in his 60s facing down a personal reckoning. His career has been characterized by consistent success, at times overwhelming fame, and the occasional criticism that he mostly plays himself onscreen...He senses a widening distance between him and his younger daughter (Edwards), while still being haunted by the firmer estrangement from his eldest (Keough). He’s mourning the sudden death of the director who got him his big break (Broadbent). And he tensely reunites with an acting-school buddy who didn’t make it (Crudup), leading to a brutal reality check on the complex personal choices that lead to megafame and, maybe, megaloneliness.”
Another bit of info is that Sandler plays Jay’s devoted manager Ron (Gerwig plays Ron’s wife), who was inspired by super agent Jeremy Barber, and Dern plays Liz, the famed actor’s publicist.
Amy Pascal and David Heyman, the pair of high-profile producers selected by Amazon to oversee Denis Villeneuve‘s “Bond 26,” are also involved as part of the producing team via their banners Pascal Pictures and Heyman Films.
“Jay Kelly” is set to hit theaters in a limited capacity on November 14 before it drops on the streaming service in early December. Now, we potentially wait for Netflix to roll out a trailer or footage.
Check out those newly unleashed images below, featuring some beautiful shots lined up by Oscar-winning cinematographer Linus Sandgren of “La La Land.”
