We’re a handful of years removed from the Paramount+ original miniseries adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel “The Stand,” starring James Marsden and Alexander Skarsgård, and Paramount Pictures is already moving forward with a new feature film version, with director Doug Liman attached to helm it.
The development of the latest iteration of “The Stand” was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, who added that Liman is producing alongside Tyler Thompson of Cross Creek Pictures; the two previously worked together on “American Made.”

“The Stand” is based on King’s novel, published in 1978, which is set in the United States after a deadly virus has killed off a majority of the world’s population, as the story follows the survivors of the plague. A post-apocalyptic concept not too far removed from hit shows such as “The Last of Us” and “The Walking Dead.”
However, at this point, the studio is seeking a screenwriter to tackle this new version of “The Stand,” so they don’t have a script draft currently in place, which gives Liman plenty of time to tackle his next ambitious studio project.
An official synopsis of the previous miniseries from Paramount:
When a killer plague wipes out 99% of the world’s population, the embattled survivors struggle to make their way in a post-apocalyptic reality. This 2020 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand frames the eternal battle between good and evil, as embodied by the peaceful prophet Mother Abagail and the menacing presence of Randall Flagg.
Liman is in the pre-production phase of the upcoming Tom Cruise-led undersea blockbuster “Deeper” that is currently undergoing a bidding war (said to be looking for a budget in the $200 million range) and has “Ballerina” actress Ana de Armas attached as Cruise’s co-star. The filmmaker has also been trying to reunite with Cruise on a sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow” at Village Roadshow/Warner Bros., and was developing another project that aimed to work with SpaceX to film scenes in space.”
A “Roadhouse” remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal was the filmmaker’s last effort, but Liman won’t be directing the recently announced “Roadhouse 2” as those duties have landed at the feet of Guy Ritchie (“MobLand,” “The Gentlemen”).
This news comes after Paramount and British director Edgar Wright are gearing up for the upcoming release of their other big King adaptation, “The Running Man,” starring Glen Powell, Colman Domingo, and Josh Brolin, which is coming to theaters on November 7.
