Another heavyweight addition to the cast of Sam Mendes‘ (“1917”) quadrilogy of “Beatles” biopics, as Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) has been enlisted to play Linda McCartney in the movies (potentially showing up in more than one). This would be a reunion between Ronan and fellow Irish actor/co-star Paul Mescal, who had been tapped to play Paul McCartney in Mendes’ four feature films.
Mescal and Ronan had previously worked together on the 2023 sci-fi psychological drama “FOE,” as the two played a married couple, and Deadline is reporting on the casting, with other trade outlets backing it up. Linda, an American musician, and Paul first met and married in the 1960s. They would go on to collaborate professionally through their band “Wings,” and Linda tragically died after battling breast cancer in 1998.
As previously announced, other cast members tapped to play other members of the iconic and influential British pop group include Harrison Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. We’re still waiting on who else is taking other supporting roles in the four films at Sony Pictures, as each installment will tell the story of each Beatle, which is going to be a rather large and daunting task.
Mendes also made the brilliant move by hiring Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser to shoot the four movies, as confirmed by actor Josh Brolin explaining why the director of photography wasn’t coming back to tackle Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune: Part Three.”
Another big role to fill is Yoko Ono, after “Shogun” actress Anna Sawai dismissed casting rumblings. Slightly more minor roles in the first film could include former band members, such as drummer Pete Best and bass guitarist Stuart Sutcliffe, the latter had been the subject of a previous and lesser-known biopic, “Backbeat” from 1994, as Sutcliffe sadly passed away at the young age of 21 in Berlin after exiting the Beatles.
We’ll just have to be patient, but with Ronan set, more names aren’t likely far behind.
