‘X-Men’ Director Jake Schreier Says ‘Beef’ Creator Lee Sung Jin & ‘Thunderbolts*’ Co-Writer Joanna Calo Are Rewriting Reboot’s Script

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had any substantive update concerning Marvel Studios‘ “X-Men” reboot, and now director Jake Schreier has revealed in a recent interview that some rather impressive writers have been enlisted to help rewrite the script that had been previously worked on by Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”).

During a chat with Collider to promote the upcoming second season of the Netflix series “Beef” (premiering April 16), Schreier revealed that “Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo (“Thunderbolts*,” “The Bear,” “Beef”) are currently working on a draft for “X-Men,” which is obviously a great update to hear from the filmmaker.

“We’re still developing. You know, one of the exciting things that’s tying into ‘Beef’ is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season. Obviously, I mean, Beef is Sonny’s show, and Joanna worked on the season as well, and we worked together on Season 1 of ‘Beef’ and on ‘Thunderbolts*.’ They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again,” Schreier said of the status of the MCU reboot and the hiring of new screenwriters.

“When you go back and read ‘X-Men’ [comics], there’s ideology but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality. Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what ‘X-Men’ can be.”

Marvel has already dabbled with mutants since getting the rights back from 20th Century Fox, with projects like the Disney+ animated “X-Men ’97” (season two on the way!), “Deadpool & Wolverine” not only brings back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine but also allowed Channing Tatum to suit up as Gambit (returning for “Avengers: Doomsday“), and has alluded to other established MCU characters being part of the fold (Namor and Ms. Marvel).

Other than previous comments made Marvel’s Kevin Feige that they’re aiming for a “youth-focused” reboot (super-fans may want to prepare themselves for recastings), we don’t know who the villains (Hellfire Club, Sentinels, or Mister Sinister?) will be or how exactly they aim to introduce the “X-Men” into the MCU (although there have been plenty of theories and speculation on that front online).

We’ll just have to be patient as “Avengers: Secret Wars” seems to be the next big project that is a major priority for the studio alongside completing “Doomsday” and Sony‘s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
