Matt Reeves Teases More ‘Batman’ Spinoffs Beyond ‘The Penguin’ As Other Gotham Characters May Deserve Their Own Stories

Matt Reeves is teasing plans for his corner of Elseworlds at DC Studios with “The Batman Part II” and is teasing more spinoffs beyond “The Penguin.” IndieWire was able to briefly pick Reeves’ brain at The Emmys about the prospect of more spinoffs and dished a bit about the upcoming sequel.

“I totally do, we’ve talked about it,” Reeves said when asked if there are more characters that deserve their own spinoffs like Colin Farrell‘s Oz Cobb/Penguin. But he was cautious that he’s not exactly in charge of things, and he’s currently busy with the sequel, “That’s where the priorities have been,” the director added. “These conversations may or may not… look, I’m not in control of DC, and I can only tell you what I’d love to do, and there are things they know we would love to do, and those conversations may begin again when it’s appropriate.”

We noted earlier today that Reeves is mulling over a second season of “The Penguin” with showrunner Lauren LeFranc but was clear to point out that Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone (she won an Emmy for her performance on Sunday) won’t be showing up, but that may change, as the director is keen on working with her in the future (maybe Sofia will be saved for the third installment?).

We wouldn’t be all that shocked if Reeves is given the same kind of standalone status that Christopher Nolan‘s movies got in the past but with an added bonus of TV spinoffs, as James Gunn has debunked internet chatter that Robert Pattinson‘s Batman would be the one for the mainline DCU as introduced in “Creature Commandos” and is expected to land a new actor for “The Brave & The Bold” (that’s if this new version of Bruce doesn’t appear in “Man of Tomorrow” before that).

With all that said, we could theorize that a Batman character like Harvey Dent’s transition from Gotham City prosecutor to gangland member, Two-Face, could be the Reeves/DC’s version of “Better Call Saul” mixed with elements of “Lincolon Lawyer,” but we’ll see if something like that ends up getting explored or not on the small screen for HBO Max or if characters in “The Batman Part II” also become fan-favorites like Farrell’s Oz.

Jeffrey Wright‘s Jim Gordon, Barry Keoghan‘s Joker, Bane (a potential prison drama could be interesting given he was born and raised behind bars by a fictional authorian government), The Court of Owls, Black Mask, Talia al Ghul, and The Red Hood could be envisioned as excellent mature source material to be considered for the HBO Max side of things set in the world that is being overseen by Reeves, that is, if they don’t end up getting used completely for the next two feature films.

We’re still a little in the dark if James Watkin‘s “Clayface” body horror movie is going to be part of the mainline DCU or link-up with what is Reeves is doing with his Batman movies, as some eagle-eyed fans have spotted multiple refences to “The Penguin” but could be simply prop/set departments having fun with set elements that may not even be picked-up by cameras.

Filming on “The Batman Part II” is gearing up for an April/spring shoot, and we’ll likely start hearing about casting on the project by the end of the year, if not sooner.
