We were enthralled when it was announced that British actress Vanessa Kirby was announced as the new version of Sue Storm in Matt Shakman‘s “Fantastic Four” reboot, and we won’t have to wait too much longer to see her big screen return with Kirby reprising the beloved Marvel heroine for “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Kirby was speaking with Josh Horowitz on his popular industry podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” where her involvement with “Doomsday” was brought up alongside working with The Russo Brothers and shooting such a rather massive superhero event film while deep into her pregnancy.
“It’s been a complete privilege, and [the Russo Brothers] have been amazing. As you know, I’m pregnant, and it’s been the coolest thing to be shooting an ‘Avengers’ movie while pregnant. They’ve been utterly amazing, the Russos and [Kevin Feige], and the whole team,” the actress said of her excitement to be shooting an “Avengers” movie while pregnant
Actresses shooting large-scale blockbusters while pregnant isn’t exactly common, but there are examples of where this wasn’t a huge deal, and productions simply figured out how to work around this. Some Disney projects we could cite as modern examples include Scarlett Johansson during the shoot for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (hinted at by Kirby) and Penélope Cruz for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”
“It’s been so easy to trust them,” Kirby said of working with and trusting the process with the Russo Brothers at the helm. “Because they so know the world better than anything, and it’s a very relaxing thing to come into something where someone really knows what their process…They describe it like they’re a recipe, right? There’s a recipe of different ingredients. It’s unbelievable that these ‘Avengers’ movies work in such a beautiful way. You look at ‘Infinity War’ and you’ve got all these different energies, but somehow they all fuse together.”
The newly minted MCU actress also briefly dispelled previous casting rumors that she had been up for the Selina Kyle role in Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman,” or a part in “Birds of Prey.” Although she respects the world of DC Comics, and compares it to Greek myths.
We’re still waiting for concrete plot details for “Avengers: Doomsday,” but Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming recently teased he was shooting a fight scene against Pedro Pascal‘s Mister Fantastic, likely hinting toward a potential conflict between those Singerverse returning mutant characters from the world of “X-Men” and Marvel’s first family.
A “Fantastic Four 2” is very much in the cards at Marvel Studios after the first installment made an impressive estimated $218 million at the global box office, a solid start after the previous Foxverse reboot failed to woo audiences. However, we’re still waiting to hear officially if Shakman will return to direct or simply move on to other things, handing off duties to another filmmaker.
Feel free to watch/listen to that full conversation between Kirby and Horowitz below.
