After some major production hiccups and a shutdown, Todd Haynes‘ period gay romance feature “De Noche” has been revived thanks to actor Pedro Pascal taking a lead role in the project.
Deadline first revealed that the in-demand actor who was previously seen this year in “Matrialists,” “Eddington,” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” would be taking over for Pascal’s recent co-star Joaquin Phoenix, who had originally been attached to “De Noche” before the movie was unplugged and led to some controversy as it was an extremely messy parting of ways.
Danny Ramirez of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Captain America: Brave New World” is expected to return to the role he had been previously cast in, which would be opposite Pascal as his character’s love interest. Harkening back to Haynes’ widely praised film “Carol,” we will see two men in love traveling from Los Angeles to Mexico during the 1930s in “De Noche.”
Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler’s Killer Films are producing, after recently working with Pascal, A24, and Celine Song on “Materialists,” which could explain the actor’s newly announced involvement.
Haynes’ last film was the 2023 Netflix original “May December” starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton.
Other things Pascal is involved with are being part of the massive cast of The Russo Brothers‘ “Avengers: Doomsday” (assumed to return for “Avengers: Secret Wars“), may end up taking over for Oscar Isaac in Tony Gilroy‘s “Behemoth!,” Jon Favreau‘s “Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu,” and an unannounced “Fantastic Four” sequel (part of his overall deal with Marvel).
Production on “De Noche” is reportedly aiming to begin shooting in the new year in Guadalajara, Mexico. Hopefully, nothing else ends up delaying the project, and it will finally be completed after all these headaches.
