‘Death Of A Salesman’ To Star Oscar Winners Jeffrey Wright & Octavia Spencer For Amblin/Focus Features

The iconic Arthur Miller stage play “Death of A Salesman” is getting a new feature film adaptation from Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment and Universal‘s Focus Features, with quite the acting duo and creative team being enlisted for it.

A report from Deadline has revealed that “Till” and “Clemency” director Chinonye Chukwu is at the helm of the latest iteration and is also co-writing with screenwriter Tony Kushner, who wrote Spielberg’s version of “West Side Story.” Their take on “Death of A Salesman” has been able to secure heavyweight acting talent as well, with Oscar-winners Jeffrey Wright and Octavia Spencer taking the lead roles of Willy Loman and Linda Loman, respectively.

Miller’s original play, which debuted back in 1949 and has seen multiple versions over the decades, focuses on Willy Loman, an aging traveling salesman, who tries to fix his relationship with his family (including his two sons) after habitually putting work first. Also, as the title alludes to, there is a looming dark cloud throughout the play; Loman commits suicide in the hopes that his family will collect the insurance money.

It’s unclear who is going to end up playing Willy and Linda’s sons, Biff and Happy, but it allows for some on-the-rise talent to board the project with Wright and Spencer adding their gravitas as the film’s main topliners.

Wright has been as busy as it gets after winning the Best Actor Oscar statue for “American Fiction,” appearing in the second season of “The Last of Us,” was in Wes Anderson‘s “The Phoenician Scheme,” is expected to reprise the Comissioner Gordon role in Matt Reeves’The Batman Part 2,” and has a meaty supporting role opposite Denzel Washington in Spike Lee‘s “Highest 2 Lowest.” His next release is expected to be Olivier Assayas‘ “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” a fictional tale of how a Russian filmmaker becomes an unlikely advisor to Vladimir Putin as he rises to power after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Given all the players involved with this new “Death of A Salesman” remake, it certainly is in a great position to make the festival circuit and could be a strong contender, come award season.
