Noah Hawley Was Confused By ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Having Not Watched ‘Falcon,’ Not Done Telling ‘Fargo’ Stories

Before the merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox, one of the Marvel Comics projects being worked on at the film division was a solo “Doctor Doom” movie from Noah Hawley (“Fargo”) that ultimately got scrapped like a handful of other things.

Speaking with The Playlist’s Mike DeAngelo on an upcoming episode of “The Bingeworthy” podcast to promote his new spinoff/prequel series “Alien: Earth,” Hawley pointed out recently watching “Captain America: Brave New World” but was a tad confused and lost watching it, having not experienced the events of “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier,” echoing a complaint that audiences maybe having strained viewing experiences if they didn’t tune in for the series covering Sam Wilson’s non-theatrical accesion to the Captain America mantle.

Mentioning that their intention with “Alien: Earth” series is not to alienate audiences who haven’t consumed the seven feature films beforehand and being able to jump in without doing the homework, “It’s like I went to see that last ‘Captain America’ movie and I hadn’t seen [‘The Falcon & The Winter Soldier’ series]. Half of it, I was like, I don’t understand what’s happening in this movie.”

“With ‘Fargo,’ I always felt like, because there are closed-ended stories, you can watch it in any order. You could watch the movie and then series one through five, or you could watch five and then go back, and then at some point watch the movie, and it all fits in together.”

When pressed about the future of “Fargo” and another season, Hawley stated that while he’s “not done” telling stories in that world, his current commitment is with “Alien: Earth,” which we assume could get a season two pick-up if FX brass is happy with the Hulu/Disney+ viewership for the pricey streaming series.

“We’re done for now, meaning the next year or so, but I do have a thought, and I have been talking to FX about it. I just think that, you know, they’ve been very clear that their global priority is ‘Alien’ and then in success, more ‘Alien.’ And then we can talk about another season of ‘Fargo.’ But, you know, I love telling stories in that world and that tone of voice. So I’m not done with it.”

That sounds like Hawley will try to juggle both if the timing and scheduling allow for another run of “Fargo” episodes.

Since Hawley’s nixed Doom project, Robert Downey Jr. has been cast as a Multiverse version for “Avengers: Doomsday.” We’ll be curious if any of that material he wrote for the solo movie was carried over to the new MCU event film or could be explored again in the future.

In the meantime, the first three episodes of “Alien: Earth” are available to stream.
