A24 is behind a “Friday the 13th” prequel series, “Crystal Lake,” starring Linda Cardellini, and is said to be pursuing the film and television rights to another iconic horror/slasher franchise, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Deadline is backing up a previous report from The InSneider that A24 is said to have secured the rights to “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which was loosely influenced by infamous cannibal serial killer Ed Gein (subject of Ryan Murphy‘s “Monster: The Story of Ed Gein” that has Charlie Hunnam in the role). This comes after there had been an active bidding war with all sorts of suitors in the mix.
As a series (once developed as a feature as reported by Deadline back in March) in the works from director JT Mollner (“Strange Darling”), well-known genre producer Roy Lee, and Glen Powell. However, they’re quick to point out that Powell isn’t attached as an actor.
Although the outlet cautions that this might be premature and A24 hasn’t made this deal or collaboration official. This move by A24 is expected to potentially kill a gestating feature film directed and co-written by Bryan Bertino, with Oz Perkins producing, as well as a Taylor Sheridan-produced version (again, things could change). Adding that Lee and Netflix, which released the last feature back in 2022, are potentially behind the next feature still in play with A24’s participation.
First released in 1974 and celebrating its 50th Anniversary back in 2024, it inspired things like Ridley Scott‘s “Alien” franchise. And the misguised follow-up to the gritty movie that featured Dennis Hopper as an unhinged lawman among the cast was a much more satirical take on the material and ended up a bit of a cult film among horror fans. Leading to a heap of other installments over the years, sequels (a young Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger starred in “The Next Generation“), prequels, and reboots.
Mollner seemingly confirmed his involvement with those talks on social media in July, teasing that connection with a pic of Leatherface from the iconic original Tobe Hooper-directed film.
With A24 becoming a huge voice in the world of hororr filmmaking, maybe them getting access to another horror legacy project like “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” isn’t the worst thing imaginable.
