Back in 2023, it was announced that British comedic actor and musician Matt Berry (“Toast of London”) was in the mix to play the character Steve in “A Minecraft Movie,” but ultimately that role would land in the lap of Jack Black and we know have a better picture why Berry exited the video game adaptation (which has earned an impressive $323 million at the global box office in a matter of days).
Puck News reports in their newsletter that casting switch-up was mainly down to the Hollywood strikes (actor and writer unions went on strike to get better deals for their members), leading to scheduling conflicts.
Berry was still contractually obligated to keep filming the vampire mockumentary comedy series “What We Do In The Shadows” in Toronto, Canada, while the “A Minecraft Movie” production team was filming in Auckland, New Zealand.
Black was instead cast as Steve opposite Jason Momoa, who wasn’t unfamiliar to director Jared Hess after the two previously worked on the wrestling comedy “Nacho Libre.” Of course, with “A Minecraft Movie” now being a massive hit, there is going to be an obvious push to churn out a multitude of sequels at Warner Bros. as there is clearly a rather large audience willing to support subsequent projects.
“What We Do In The Shadows” has now wrapped up after ending on six seasons, Berry is likely in a much better position to be attaching himself to blockbuster movie roles or future franchise starters. Honestly, we can’t wait to see what the comedic actor does next and are hopeful he hasn’t soured on the idea of making big movies.
