Tom Holland Promises ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Will Be Shot More Like ‘Homecoming’: “We’re Going To Lean Into That Old School Way Of Filming”

Marvel Studios‘ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is going to be the first time we’ll see a live-action Spidey and Punisher coming together as Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal (who will be next seen together in Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey“) are set to crossover in the latest installment from director Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings”)

We’re now hearing from Holland, who is promising that they’re going to be going back to more practical set pieces and that it’ll be more like shooting “Spider-Man: Homecoming” than the CGI-focused sequels, the latter limiting what they could do because of COVID-19.

Holland ended up chatting with Flip Your Wig (spotted by Men’s Journal and video posted on Instagram) and promised an “old school” way of filmmaking on “Brand New Day” that feels a lot closer to “Spider-Man: Homecoming” rather than the previous sequels.

“We were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID. We shot the entire film on stages,” Holland admitted to Flip Your Wig. “Now, we’re really gonna lean into that old school filmmaking and shoot in real locations.”

“We are gonna use the streets of Glasgow for this massive set piece that we are putting together…It’s gonna feel like a breath of fresh air, and I think the fans are gonna be over the moon with what we’re putting together. So, it’s going to feel like making [‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’] again. You know, it’s been such a long time since I’ve done it, it’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air, and I think fans are going to be over the moon.” Holland said of the upcoming MCU installment.

Sounds like Marvel learned a little from Jake Schreier‘s (reportedly in the mix to direct “X-Men“) recent shoot on “Thunderbolts/The New Avengers,” as that film spent quite a bit of the production filming on location in existing spaces and using practical sets when compared to other recent releases.

For the time being, we’re still sort of in the dark if “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is going to bring the web-head back to the world of street-level heroics (something brought up by Kevin Feige in the past), as there are plenty of online rumors suggesting another exhausting Multiverse plot or the involvement of other MCU characters that could easily bloat the film’s VFX budget.

Then again, if they’re attempting to bring in Bernthal’s Frank Castle in a major supporting role after having Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it bodes well that there could be some street-level beats going on in the new installment.
