‘Project Hail Mary’ First Reactions: Ryan Gosling’s Buzzy Sci-Fi Pic Called “Thrilling” & “Heartfelt”

After being fired from “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” the directing duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are finally back in the world of outer space sci-fi. They’re behind Amazon MGM Studios‘ “Project Hail Mary,” as the movie focuses on a school teacher who is tasked with an important mission to discover why the sun is dying in hopes of saving the people of Earth from disaster.

Canadian actor Ryan Gosling (“Star Wars: Starfighter,” “Blade Runner 2049”) leads a cast that also features Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall,” “Zone of Interest”), Lionel Boyce (“The Bear”), Ken Leung (“Industry”), and Milana Vayntrub (“Werewolves Within”).

The Playlist’s own Gregory Ellwood commented on Blusky: “Ryan Gosling is utterly fantastic in Project Hail Mary. The movie also has some incredibly directed sequences that will make you gasp. It peaks emotionally a bit earlier than you’d expect and has an extra ending it might not need but will be a lot of viewers’ favorite movie for years. Score, VFX are fire.”

Despite the movie coming out next month, check out a wave of first reactions from some early screenings:

An official logline for the upcoming flick:

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.

“Project Hail Mary” has a main producing team that consists of Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and author Andy Weir. Others set as executive producers are Patricia Whitcher, Goddard, Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida, Sarah Esberg, and Ken Kao.

That’s not it, as a new featurette has arrived that you can watch below, as “Project Hail Mary” heads to theaters on March 20, and has a script by Drew Goddard, based on the novel by Weir (Goddard previously adapted Weir’s other popular sci-fi book “The Martian” for director Ridley Scott).
