Last month, an early group of films heading to the Cannes Film Festival included Ari Aster‘s (“Midsommar“) latest effort “Eddington,” his follow-up to nightmare-fuel “Beau Is Afraid.” A first-look image has made its way online (via Film Crave) and features Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix, reuniting with Aster, in character as local law enforcement in what looks like a police station or office.
“Eddington” is said to be focusing on an ambitious small-town sheriff in New Mexico, but we’re still waiting for some more concrete details about his pandemic-set Western as the pic headed to the European Film Market in February and already has the backing of heavyweight genre studio, A24.
The impressive cast supporting Phoenix features the likes of Pedro Pascal (“Gladiator II”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Austin Butler (“The Bikeriders”), Deirdre O’Connell (“The Penguin”), Micheal Ward (“Top Boy”), Clifton Collins Jr. (“Triple 9”), and Luke Grimes (“Yellowstone”).
Aster had been “disappointed” by the previous reaction to his last film, “Beau Is Afraid,” which certainly has its defenders and was designed to be a divisive film but remains to be seen what audiences and critics will think of “Eddington.” The pic is expected to see Aster playing with different settings and potential genres as well, a trailer will likely give us a better sense of the tone they’re going for, too.
We’re still waiting for A24 and international partners to announce official theatrical release dates for “Eddington” or what film festivals (Cannes looking really good) it will be screening. Given the high-profile nature of the project, we likely won’t have to wait too long before getting some substantial updates.
