Oscar Isaac is having a bit of a moment with his latest film, “Frankenstein,” from writer/director Guillermo del Toro, finally bringing his Gothic sci-fi tale to the big screen and Netflix with the beloved actor in the role of the iconic but dubious mad scientist Victor Frankenstein. And is now talking about a potential return to the “Star Wars” franchise, but it would require Lucasfilm‘s parent company, Disney, to not “succumb to fascism” in the wake of their near-firing of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel at the behest of President Trump and FCC chair Brendan Carr (behind not so covert threats of nixing broadcasting licenses if displeased by statements or jokes made at Trump’s expense, an attack on free speech).
Speaking with GQ Magazine, admittedly, the interview took place two days after the Kimmel dust-up (being so close to those events are likely influencing his criticisms of Disney and tone), Isaac brought up the caveat to his hypothetical return to “Star Wars” would be the company protecting free speech and not giving in to fascist government threats to employees and creatives alike.

“Yeah. I mean, I’d be open to it, although right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great…if that happens, then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away. Or any number of other things,” Isaac said of his potential return to the role of rebellious X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron and the “Star Wars” franchise.
The idea of sequel trilogy cast members returning for more “Star Wars” isn’t really a new one. Daisy Ridley is still officially attached to play Rey Skywalker, again, for “Star Wars: New Jedi Order,” Adam Driver nearly came back too for “The Hunt For Ben Solo” from Steven Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns (was axed by Disney after being greenlit), and there had even been an openess from John Boyega to potentially reprise Finn after multiple conversations with Lucasfilm’s head Kathleen Kennedy.
That said, this is Isaac sounding much more open to coming back than in previous comments on the subject, and could be sort of an olive branch for his participation in the future, despite the criticism. If you weren’t already aware, “Frankenstein” can now be streamed exclusively on Netflix, which also co-stars actors Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz.
