DC Studios CEO James Gunn Promises He’s Listening To Fans As They “Hammer Out The New DCU”

While folks are still arguing online if Warner Bros. Discovery and the newly formed DC Studios (led by James Gunn and Peter Safran) will bring back Zack Snyder’s vision for the DC Comics Cinematic Universe or David Ayer’s original cut of “Suicide Squad,” there seems to be a clear message that they are working towards a new DCU. It’s unclear what it ultimately looks like, but Gunn is very much interested in what the fans have to say or what they’d like to see happen in it.

In a Twitter thread posted over the weekend, Gunn made his intentions clear to the fans and is open to suggestions as they move forward with a new era of the DC Comics Cinematic Universe.

“As the new (and first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter and I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, and let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC. Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening and open to everything as we embark on this journey, and will continue to do so for the next few years. But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, and telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, and animated projects. We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

Of course, this echoes the previous reporting that Warner Bros. Discovery is very much interested in a “reset” of the DC franchise, and these comments from the new brass overseeing the cinematic universe do suggest they aren’t terribly interested in restoring the Snyderverse. This actually might be the best as Snyder is busy making a fleet of original films for Netflix (“Army of The Dead” and “Rebel Moon” being franchise starters for the streaming giant) and seemingly extremely passionate about that new adventure.

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been a large groundswell of support to see any version of “Man of Steel 2” with Henry Cavill now officially back as Superman. It’s also worth mentioning that on the first day of Gunn’s new gig at DC Studios he did post a picture of Clark Kent at a typewriter on Twitter which seems like a clear sign that Superman is now a huge priority and might lead to that big crossover with Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” or finally a true solo adventure for the son of Krypton.

Normally, we haven’t seen this kind of direct outreach from the folks running the DC projects and it seems refreshing that DC Studios could be a bit more interactive with fans than the secretive hive at Marvel Studios. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that DC Studios will circle back to foul-mouthed alien biker bounty hunter Lobo and WWII action hero Sgt. Rock after previous attempts by Guy Ritchie (“The Gentlemen”) to make their solo films over a decade ago given that they feel part of Gunn’s wheelhouse. The latter was almost made in the 1980s with Arnold Schwarzenegger during the “Predator” era and director Quentin Tarantino once considered making his own version too.
