Originally, when Luke Skywalker made an appearance at the end of “The Mandalorian” season two finale he was played by actor Mark Hamill with digital alterations to de-age to a post-“Star Wars: Return of The Jedi” version of the Jedi hero. However, the look of the character was unsettling. It appeared Lucasfilm had figured out how to fix some of those issues when Skywalker made his triumphant return in an episode of “The Book of Boba Fett,” where it seemed that the on-set performance was completely replaced by body double actor Graham Hamilton and Hamill wasn’t involved.
That isn’t exactly the case as new behind-the-scenes images (see below) from “Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett” via Screen Rant clearly show Hamill with the Grogu puppet, Rosario Dawson in makeup as Ahsoka Tano, and even one pic of him alongside Hamilton.

We don’t know exactly what the reasoning was behind hiring two actors to seemingly do the same scenes, but it could be simply that Hamilton needed to see the mannerisms of Hamill to really get “young Luke” down instead of trying something himself and it not looking right. Whatever it came down to, the process appears to have been very time-consuming and expensive.
Many of us are curious about what ultimately happens when Lucasfilm decides to make a Luke Skywalker project with this era’s incarnation of the character. Do they keep spending all this time and effort on a digital version or the cheaper option which is to simply hire a replacement like Marvel actor Sebastian Stan, who is a spitting image of Hamill?
It’s hard to imagine that Disney will resist making a Skywalker project for Disney+ at some point and it would be a perfect excuse to take a Legends character like Mara Jade (Luke’s wife and former Imperial stooge in novelizations) and place her directly into “Star Wars” canon. Perhaps Jade has a tragic death between the films and shows as that could be a good reason why Skywalker is now focusing on a new Jedi school until Ben Solo destroys it.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” is the next big “Star Wars” project which releases on May 27 and you can see those aforementioned images of Hamill on the set of “Book of Boba Fett” below.
