We were all pleasantly surprised that Tom Cruise‘s first big collaboration with Warner Bros. in years (previously titles such as “The Last Samurai” and “Edge of Tomorrow“) would see the action star link up with Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu (“The Revenant”) for an untitled comedy, but it sounds like the surprises won’t end with that tantalizing announcement.
The filmmaker is promoting the re-release of his acclaimed film “Amores Perros” for the 25th Anniversary in theaters this month and dished to IndieWire about working with Cruise on his untitled comedy, boasting that audiences are in store for a big surprise from the action star.
“We’re going to finish in February, March,” Iñárritu said of the film’s current status in the post-production stages. “We still have a long way [in] post-production.” On the topic of working with Cruise, “It was the most amazing, unexpected, sweet, gentle [relationship] that I have had on a set…His manners, his understanding, his passion, and his integrity, and the way he prepares. He loves the process. Filmmaking has been his life for 40 years. I have never seen somebody so devoted. I was happy to share with him that passion. And at the same time, we built an incredible [relationship] of mutual trust. He will surprise the world. People will see a new kind of thing. It was blessed, and not only him, but all the cast: Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, and Jesse Plemons. We had a blast. It was challenging, but it was wild comedy. And we laugh a lot. We have a wild time.”
All said, Cruise isn’t a stranger to the world of comedy, having dabbled in comedic moments throughout his entire career, even with his breakout project “Risky Business” to his memorable part in Ben Stiller‘s “Tropic Thunder,” as the makeup heavy foul-mouthed studio executive Les Grossman (Cruise and longtime pal Christopher McQuarrie are said to be developing a spinoff project)
Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are trying to get financing for their ambitious undersea flick “Deeper” (also has Ana de Armas attached as the co-lead and is seeking a budget in the range of $200 million), with a sequel to their film “Edge of Tomorrow” said to be still on the table alongside a project that is aiming to be shot in space with the help of Elon Musk‘s company SpaceX (although, working with Musk is likely going to be much more controversial than it was a few years ago).
Other things that being put together is Paramount‘s “Top Gun 3” (we’re still waiting for production and release dates on that front) and there had been some hints from mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski (busy with his “Miami Vice” remake) about their desire for a potential “F1” and “Days of Thunder” crossover allowing for a reunion between Brad Pitt and Cruise.
While we’re still waiting for a release for the aforementioned comedy, thanks to MUBI, audiences will be able to experience “Amores Perros” as it screened in Argentina and Colombia on October 2, and it will then be released in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and Central America from October 9. Then, on October 25, it will be able to stream on MUBI.
