‘John Wick’ Spinoff ‘Ballerina’ Disappointing Box Office Haul Said To Have Contributed To Lionsgate Quarterly Losses

The future of Ana de Armas‘ Rusko Roma-aligned assassin Eve Macarro seems to be in question after some less-than-stellar box office numbers for the “John Wick” spinoff film “Ballerina,” which are now being said to have contributed to Lionsgate‘s $94 million quarterly losses.

This financial update via Variety mentions the film (reportedly budgeted at $90-100 million), having been a factor in those company losses, as the movie was only able to earn $132.4 million (for context, the first “John Wick” only mustered $86 million), which means the film likely won’t be able to turn a profit from ticket sales. However, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer was hopeful that 2026 and 2027 would see a better outcome for the studio.

“We are taking a number of important steps toward returning to solid growth in fiscal 2027,” Feltheimer said in a statement. Adding that the company has “three major film tentpoles set for release in the coming fiscal year” and will “double our scripted television series deliveries next year and continue to innovate our brands across new businesses and onto new platforms.”

There had been some skeptical folks surrounding the filming of “Ballerina,” thinking the movie would be a complete mess after the hiring of director Len Wiseman (who hadn’t shot a feature film since the misfiring “Total Recall” reboot starring Colin Farrell) and reshoots to beef up action sequences were seen as a signal to problems beyond the editing room. But critics and audience consensus were promising for the movie, but it simply couldn’t get enough people out to the theater, even with heavy promotion of Keanu Reeves‘ John Wick participating in the film’s third act.

It’s a shame because while the movie had its flaws, there was a point where de Armas’ Eve eventually ends up having the kind of confidence during action sequences that could have worked better with a stronger story/script.

What this means for their other spinoff feature film, “Caine,” directed/starring Donnie Yen, set to shoot in Hong Kong, and the future of the de Armas character remains to be seen (perhaps, she’ll be involved with “Caine” or the upcoming “John Wick 5“).

While not telegraphed by the studio, there were assumptions that if “Ballerina” had been a hit that we could have seen a sequel in development, but what happens next for Eve is a big question mark.

An interesting factor here is that there had been reports that Legendary Entertainment (behind the “Dune” trilogy, “A Minecraft Movie,” and the MonsterVerse) is potentially a contender to buy Lionsgate.
