On the heels of Adria Arjona (“Andor”) securing a new female role in James Gunn’s “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow,” another name has been added to the DCU event film.
Gunn himself took to Threads over the weekend to announce that actor Andre Royo, likely best known to most from his work on the HBO series “The Wire,” has nabbed a part in “Man of Tomorrow.” However, the writer/director stopped short of explaining who he’ll be playing in the next “Superman” installment.
In the post, Gunn reminds us that he and Royo had previously worked on his R-rated superhero satire, “Super.” Other projects under the actor’s belt include “Red Tails,” “Shaft,” “The Spectacular Now,” “Beautiful Boy,” “Empire,” and “Fringe.”
Royo will join an established cast that features David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Lars Eidinger (in the role of villain Brainiac), Aaron Pierre (reprising the John Stewart role from “Lanterns”), and Arjona (reportedly the alien Queen Maxima, both friend and foe to the Son of Krypton).
While rumors persist of the involvement of both Wonder Woman and Batman in “Man of Tomorrow,” Gunn took to Threads back in January to tell fans publicly neither of the DC heroes would be showing up in the Superman flick, despite having Pierre’s Green Lantern in the mix. Fuelling this online speculation is that both characters have new DCU-set solo pics in the works at DC Studios.
Also, we wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa from this summer’s “Supergirl” will also be making appearances, but that’s just our assumption since Alcock had a minor cameo in “Superman” last year and her comic book connections to Brainiac.
“Man of Tomorrow” is set to be unleashed in theaters on July 9, 2027, and will see Clark teaming up with Lex Luthor (alongside other heroes from The Justice Gang) as the threat of the cosmic villain Braniac comes to Earth.
