Celine Song Continuing Rom-Com Run By Writing ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel For Sony Pictures

Celine Song has been tapped to write a direct sequel to the 1997 Julia Roberts romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

The news on the rom-com follow-up comes to us from Variety, as they reveal Song is currently only being tasked by Sony Pictures with scripting duties for the moment.

Dermont Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett were part of the original film’s supporting cast, and it remains to be seen which characters other than Roberts’ Jules Potter and Mulroney’s Michael O’Neal could be returning from the first pic helmed by P.J. Hogan.

The logline for the 1997 movie from Sony:

A high-spirited romantic comedy that serves up something wild, something new, something touching, and something truly hilarious. Roberts dazzles as commitment-shy Jules Potter, who reluctantly realizes she is in love with her best friend Michael (Mulroney). There is just one catch: he’s about to marry someone else. Comically crazed and full of devious plans, Jules will do anything to steal him back… except tell him the simple truth.

If you weren’t already aware, Song made huge waves with her debut film “Past Lives,” earning her two Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay in 2024. Her next feature effort was able to assemble Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans as the high-profile leads of Song’s matchmaker romantic comedy “Materialists.” Both of those were released by A24.

Roberts recently worked with Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino on his upcoming release “After The Hunt” (screening at the New York Film Festival and Venice Film Festival) and shot the Sam Esmail-directed thriller “Painic Carefully” earlier in the year. Her openness to make a grand return to the romantic comedy genre after pairing with George Clooney on “Ticket To Paradise” likely helped to set the wheels in motion on this sequel at Sony.

We’re still waiting for what the planned angle will be for “My Best Friend’s Wedding 2,” but if things come together quickly, there won’t be much mystery for further details for too much longer.

This won’t be the only thing Song is developing, as another project in the works for the on-the-rise director is an Esports drama series at HBO called “Damage.”
