We’ve all been fascinated by the recent call to see A-list stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt reunite after not working together since the 1994 horror pic “Interview With A Vampire” and “F1” director Joseph Kosinski is potentially manifesting a way the two could work together in the future.
When asked by GQ Magazine about his “pitch” for a Cruise and Pitt reunion (both have hinted about their interest), Kosinski mentioned the possibility of bringing in Cruise’s racecar driver character Cole Trickle from “Days of Thunder” returning with some history with Pitt’s Sonny Hayes from “F1.” It’s a good idea for an “F1” sequel since, initially, Pitt and Cruise were supposed to do a version of this movie together.

“Well, right now, it’d be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise’s] ‘Days of Thunder’ character, we find out that he and Sonny Hayes have a past. They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on ‘Interview with A Vampire’ that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn’t pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?” Kosinski mused to GQ about seeing Cruise and Pitt playing rivals in another racing flick.
This comes after Cruise came out to the film’s premiere to pose for pictures and Pitt declared he wasn’t interested in doing any plane stunts.
The 1990 Paramount film directed by the late Tony Scott (“Top Gun”) featured a cast alongside Cruise that included Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall (reunited with Cruise in “Jack Reacher“), Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker, Randy Quaid, and a young John C. Reilly. Hard not to get excited about seeing Rooker and Reilly being called up to reprise their roles for this hypothetical crossover/sequel.
Kosinski is a busy guy, and admittedly says that even something as exciting as “Bond 26” is likely off the table despite Amazon‘s current search for a director.
“I was a huge fan of Bond growing up, but you know, usually they hire Brits to direct those movies. Right now, I’ve got three things I’m developing that I’m excited about. But I will go for sure as a fan, because I love that series.”
Some of those projects asking for Kosinski’s attention, aside from “Top Gun 3,” include a UFO mystery thriller for Apple Original Films with a script from screenwriter Zach Baylin (“King Richard”) that has Jerry Bruckheimer producing and is being tasked to bring a new “Miami Vice” movie to the big screen for Universal Pictures with a script from Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler”).
Anyways, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that Kosinski can convince Cruise and mega-producer Bruckheimer to bring Cole back as the action star has been previously apprehensive about a “Days of Thunder” revival when Paramount approached Cruise in the past.
