'Fantastic Four': 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Director Jon Watts Hired For Marvel's First Family

The rumors were true! A “Fantastic Four” reboot is now officially in active development at Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige has announced that “Spider-Man: Homecoming” director Jon Watts will be the one to helm Marvel’s first family in a brand new reboot set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Watts is the helmer of the ‘Spider-Man’ series so far and is currently shooting “Spider-Man” 3 in Atlanta. Feige confirmed is officially connected to “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness,” also filming at the moment.

Fans have been hopeful that John Krasinski and Emily Blunt would take the film’s two lead roles. However, the project seems to be a little early in the development stages right now; therefore, no cast was revealed. Watts will be busy with “Spider-Man 3” until its release date on December 17th, 2021, so it’s possible we may not get casting announcements for a long time.

“The Fantastic Four” lineup includes Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Man, Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, and Ben Grimm, aka The Thing. The team helped usher-in the Marvel Comics we’re all familiar with, and a new “Fantastic Four” movie will technically be the fourth live-action incarnation on the big screen if you count the never-released Roger Corman-produced film from the 1990s. Tim Story directed two “Fantastic Four” films in the early aughts (you know, the janky one with Chris Evans as the Human Torch).

Josh Trank directed the 2015 version with Miles Teller and Kate Mara, which was ruined by the studio, 20th Century Fox, and nearly killed his career. This news might also mean that Watts won’t likely be returning to future ‘Spider-Man’ films anytime soon as one imagines he’ll be a little bit busy getting the “Fantastic Four” integrated into the MCU.
