‘Freaky Tales’ Enlists Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis & More For New Film From Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden

Director Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden made a splash when Marvel Studios hired them to helm “Captain Marvel,” the first MCU film to boast a major female superhero in the lead role. While Fleck and Boden won’t return for “The Marvels,” it looks the duo’s next project will be much more grounded. Deadline reports that Fleck and Boden team up again for “Freaky Tales,” a coming-of-age tale set in late ’80s Oakland.

“Freaky Tales” boasts an impressive cast, too, with Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Jack Champion, and Angus Cloud on board. Dominique Thorne, Keir Gilchrist, and Michelle Farrah Huang will also star in the upcoming film. Fleck and Boden and Mendelsohn last worked together on “Captain Marvel.”

Set in 1987, “Freaky Tales” takes inspiration from Fleck’s experience growing up in the Bay Area. The eOne film features four interconnected stories following one distinct character from real-life locations and noteworthy historical events. While Fleck bases some of the stories on real life, others will be entirely fictional.

Grammy-winner Raphael Saadiq (“Mudbound“), an Oakland native, will compose the film’s music. Fellow west coast musician Too $hort is also part of the film’s producing team. With those two on board, expect that the late ’80s hip-hop scene to be a large part of “Freaky Tales” and its four storylines.

Pascal recently wrapped production on the much-anticipated upcoming HBO series “The Last Of Us,” premiering on January 15, 2023. Then, Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” drops for Pascal on Disney+ in February. Expect Pascal to reprise his role as Din Djarin in a fourth season of “The Mandalorian,” too. Meanwhile, Mendelsohn and Thorne will be in the upcoming Marvel series “Secret Invasion” and “Ironheart,” respectively. Those two shows also have 2023 release dates.

As for “Freaky Tales,” don’t expect it in theaters until 2024.
