Legendary’s Monsterverse is continuing in a big way with an untitled “Godzilla x Kong” installment coming together with Grant Sputore (“I Am Mother”) replacing Adam Wingard as director on the mysterious sequel that pits various Titans against each other.
Actors Jack O’Connell (“Sinners”) and veteran thespian Delroy Lindo (“Da 5 Bloods) have joined a slowly growing cast that features Kaitlyn Dever (“The Last of Us”) and Dan Stevens (“Abigail”). The report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Lindo is expected to play a member of the secretive and sketchy group Monarch. Meanwhile, Dever and O’Connell are expected to play siblings in the sci-fi action adventure franchise that mixes disaster films with building-sized monsters battling for supremacy.
David Callaham (“Shang-Chi”) penned the script, but details about this latest installment are being kept under lock and key. However, the outlet adds that Legendary said the new film will focus on “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”
Previous crossovers “Godzilla vs. Kong” and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” had explored the Hollow Earth angle of the franchise, which could keep giving fans endless Monsterverse friends and foes as they expand that lore.
Lindo was cast in Marvel’s “Blade” reboot at one time, but future participation remains a question mark as that project keeps undergoing a handful of different rewrites and incarnations.
Speaking of Monarch, the acclaimed Apple TV+ series, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which starred breakout “Shogun” actress Anna Sawai and Kurt Russell, is getting a second season and added Amber Midthunder (“Prey”) to the cast last year. So, plenty of Titan stories are coming from Legendary to sustain an international demand for more.
Outside the Monsterverse franchise, there is a “Godzilla Minus One” sequel from Toho Studios and Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki in the works after the post-WWII film won over audiences and landed a Best Visual Effects Oscar statue.
Warner Bros. is expected to release the untitled pic in theaters on March 26, 2027.
