We can’t help but be optimistic that the recent worldwide box office numbers for “F1” ($293.6 million) and “Jurassic World Rebirth” ($318.3 million) bodes well for other upcoming July/summer releases such as James Gunn‘s “Superman” and Matt Shakman‘s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” as Gunn is downplaying his DCU reboot needing to be a massive earner to be considered successful.
Chatting with GQ Magazine in a recent profile for the DCU pic releasing from Warner Bros., Gunn is disputing theories and online talk that “Superman” has to be a juggernaut that makes $700 million at the box office to be considered successful.

“This is not the riskiest endeavor in the world,” Gunn told the outlet after picture-locking the new superhero film. “Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be. They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes [$700 million] or something, and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying.”
Gunn isn’t saying what the film needs to make to be profitable, but it doesn’t sound like there is the same level of overspending and bloated budgets related to expensive reshoots as we’ve seen with previous high-profile DC entries. Folks who know better are aware that box office goal posts set by fandom aren’t exactly based in reality, as each movie has different requirements to turn a profit.
The cast is led by David Corenswet in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Other actors on the call-sheet include Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind”), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry,” “Gotham”), Nathan Fillion (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “The Suicide Squad”), Isabela Merced (“Alien Romulus”), Skyler Gisondo (“Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart”), Sara Sampaio (“At Midnight”), María Gabriela de Faría (“The Moodys”), Wendell Pierce (“Selma,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Alan Tudyk (“Andor”), Pruitt Taylor Vince (“Bird Box”), Neva Howell (“Greedy People”), and more.
That said, the new iteration of the Man of Steel returns to theaters on July 11 as Gunn and DC Studios hope that audiences will embrace this new era of the DC Comics movies.
