Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg has been quite the character after making waves with an inventive crowdfunded satirical short film, “Kung Fury,” and eventually producing a feature-length sequel, “Kung Fury 2,” which has been stuck in limbo. A high-quality sizzle reel leaked online earlier this month, and the director is now lining up his next project, “Dragonlord.”
Speaking with Variety about “Dragonlord,” Sandberg shared a teaser image alongside a bunch of details on the “fantasy punk” film that, admittedly, is another ambitious mash-up of different genres as the director cites the influences being a mix of “The Lord of The Rings,” “Star Wars,” “He-Man & The Masters of The Universe,” “Mad Max,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” It’ll share a comedic tone similar to “Kung Fury 2,” which shouldn’t be all that surprising.
The outlet included a synopsis and a breakdown of new characters for the pic:
“The story follows a character known as Dragonlord (Sandberg), a treasure-obsessed hunter whose best friend is a Tyrannosaurus Rex called Blaze Falcon. Rather than hunt for yet more treasure, however, Blaze just wants to hang out and play video games, but when he’s kidnapped by the evil Dreadmancer (think He-Man’s archenemy Skeletor), Dragonlord must pull together an Avengers-like team of bonkers heroes to save his dino buddy.”
Alongside Dreadmancer, the lineup of figures in “Dragonlord” includes the Dread Riders (Stormtroopers proxy), a tech guy called Quantum Cobra, Sword Lord (“who used to work for Dreadmancer but fell in love with his unicorn so is now one of the good guys”), someone called Titanus whose name people keep pronouncing as “Tight Anus,” Budgie, who is a “like a bird man who shits acid,” and many more.
Ultimately, we’ll see if this ends up as a third installment of the “Kung Fury” saga, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed Sandberg’s bonkers “Kung Fury 2” (Michael Fassbender, Alexandra Shipp, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jorma Taccone star) sees the light of day, as the pic has been caught up in lawsuits after disputes with the film’s Chinese financiers, Creasun Entertainment USA.
Filming on the genre-bending fantasy project (currently in development and the scripting phase) is gearing up to start in the spring of 2026 and has the full financial backing of Finnish entrepreneur Mikko Kodisoja (won’t have the same headaches this time around), who has a virtual production facility in Finland where the project is expected to use new technologies to help keep the budget to reasonable level.
A first look image of behind-the-scenes work on the film was also shared by Variety and Sandberg (likely early test footage for “Dragonlord”), which you can see below.
