‘Mamma Mia 3’: Amanda Seyfried Wants To Recruit Sydney Sweeney & Sabrina Carpenter For “Done Deal” Musical Sequel

Actress Amanda Seyfried has a one-two-punch next month with her Paul Feig-directed thriller “The Housemaid” out on December 19 (read The Playlist’s Venice Film Festival review here) and the Shakers religious drama “The Testament of Ann Lee” arriving in theaters on Christmas Day. Now, Seyfried is teasing “Mamma Mia” fans who she wants to see in “Mamma Mia 3” (which she believes is now a “done deal”) as she seems to be publicly recuriting both her “Housemaid” co-star Sydney Sweeney and actress/singer Sabrina Carpenter (has already been rumored), the latter recently being enlisted for a gestating “Alice In Wonderland” musical at Universal Pictures (happens to be also involved with the “Mamma Mia” movies).

“Maybe I’m just naive, but I’m pretty sure ‘Mamma Mia 3’ is a done deal…I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids,” Seyfried told Entertainment Tonight of the status of the third musical installment. Adding her thoughts on potential casting ideas for new characters, “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”

“I just know the three dads [Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Colin Firth] are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter. Meryl [Streep] is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot, and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing.”

We should note that Sweeney had once expressed interest in joining the franchise in 2023, and having already worked with Seyfried, likely wouldn’t be a hard sell to get into “Mamma Mia 3.” The actress previously told Variety two years back, “I’ve always wanted to go to Greece. I love ‘Mamma Mia,’ something like that would be really fun.”

That all said, Universal hasn’t made the greenlight announcement or slotted the musical’s production or release dates, so fans hoping for “Mamma Mia 3” updates may have to be a tad patient. Although Seyfried’s desire to add Sweeney and Carpenter is certainly a really good step in the right direction, given their popularity.
